Hannah suppressed her misgivings. At first, she hadn’t trusted when Titus claimed she was Lara. She’d seen the photo of the woman and couldn’t ignore their resemblance, yet she couldn’t accept it either. It had been a stressful day and all she wanted to do was wake up from this nightmare and be back in her world before all this started. The simple Amish life she loved so much. Yet if that happened, there’d be no memories of Titus. The thought hurt.

She’d nearly convinced herself it was all her imagination. Until Donovan. Hannah recognized the tall, blond deputy director. That wasn’t something she could brush aside. She knew him, she was sure of it. If she acknowledged the possibility she might be Lara, then all these feelings made sense. And her life here in Rachel’s Crossing was smoke and mirrors. Hannah placed her hand on Nala’s shoulder, needing the dog’s quiet strength.

“We’re going to do everything in our power to find your family,” Titus reassured her once more with such sincerity that she believed him.

Yet being a CIA officer, he would possess the expertise to elicit cooperation effectively. Wait…how did she know that?

Unraveling the truth locked away in her head might be the sole means to ensure her survival.

“Arden and Saloma are all I have,” she breathed. “I can’t lose them.”

Titus clasped her hand, his touch comforting. She couldn’t imagine learning the things about her past that she’d been forced to come to grips with tonight without him. She leaned into his strength. With him close she could get through anything.

“When did you last speak to your brother and his wife?” Donovan asked, shifting her attention away from the man who prompted emotions she struggled to understand.

Hannah explained that she’d last seen them in church and the three of them were supposed to meet at the auction.

Titus exchanged an unreadable look with his colleague that fueled her apprehension. “Did you notice anyone suspicious hanging around the auction today?”

“You mean besides you?”

He grinned and lowered his head. “Again, I’m sorry about stalking you, but you’ve seen the photo of Lara. You understand our concern. Even if you’re not her, it’s clear that Red Dragon’s men are convinced you are.”

“I don’t know what else to tell you.” She pulled her hand free. The unexplained feelings Titus’s touch invoked had her wishing she understood them better.

“What did your brother say to you about your past?” Donovan’s question threw her. An attempt to trip her up. Why would she have that belief? She felt the urge to be guarded around him, but she didn’t know why. Maybe because he’d just joined them, whereas Titus had been with her all night.

“I told your partner everything already,” she said.

Donovan smiled sympathetically. “I realize this may feel repetitive but sometimes things pop into your head that you may not have remembered before.”

Hannah found it impossible to disregard her misgivings. Even so, she proceeded to fill him in on the accident and about visiting her parents’ gravesites before moving to Rachel’s Crossing.
